Episode 47 - Are You Saved?
Justin: [00:00:00] Hi everyone, this is Justin Olbrantz and this is Don Schaefer, and you are listening to The Wise and the Wandering Podcast. For those who know “The Way,” And for those who are lead astray. And if you feel like you fall into either of those categories, then you're in the right place. So let's dive in…
Justin: So Don, what are we going to talk about today? (Don) Well, we got a good one here is called Are you Saved? Are You Saved? Yes. Okay. So today that is a question, right? So we're we're saying are you saved? Today I want to talk about what it looks like to be saved. Right? You know, we have people that are believers that are listening to this and I've been witnessing that we have people that are non-believers that are listening to [00:01:00] this podcast that might not be saved.
Justin: Yes. So are you saved or are you not
Justin: saved, is the question. And that's what I wanna talk about today. So we're gonna get into what it looks like to talk about salvation, what it means to. Be saved, what it means to have a savior and why we need a savior. Yes.
Don: Yeah. And that's basically why Jesus came into this world.
Don: God gave us an avenue that we can find salvation. Mm-hmm. And a lot of times what's salvation and being saved is, is saving us from ourselves.
Justin: Yes.
Don: Because we get ourselves in a world where we're. Full of, uh, doing things wrong and, and we're not happy and we're miserable. And some people deal with depression, deal with a lot of different attributes of what sin causes.
Don: Mm-hmm. But Jesus came to save us from all that.
Justin: Yeah. So Jesus is the savior. And, and why do we need a savior? Right? Because there's so much corruption in the world. There's so much evil in the world. People are living in [00:02:00]darkness and they're looking for a way out. People are. Enslaved at the time there was, before Jesus came, there was a lot of captivity that was happening, right.
Justin: People, for instance, the Roman Empire was, , very strong at the time and was holding a lot of these Jewish lands in captivity. So when it comes to a savior. We need somebody to bring us out of darkness. That's right. So as the savior and the son of God, which he was Jesus, he's described as, sinless and without any fault.
Justin: That's right. Oh yeah. Hebrews uh, Hebrews chapter four, verse 15 states that for we do not have a high priest who is unable to empathize with our weaknesses, but we have one who has been tempted in every way just as we are. Yet he did not sin. Yes. Okay. So this scripture highlights that he's showing us the way to lead a [00:03:00] holy life and be set apart from the rest.
Don: That's right.
Justin: And the reason I say that is because first. I just wanna talk about what the word holy means. Okay? Okay. So we have the Holy Bible, right?
both: Mm-hmm. But
Justin: what is Holy, . , the word Holy. In the context of the Bible, it comes from the Hebrew word, Kadosh, Kadosh, and the Greek word actually “hagios.” I think I'm saying that right. But it means set apart or separated, or sacred or consecrated, right?
Justin: So it describes something. Or someone who is dedicated to God distinct from. The profane or the common, you know, distinct from the common way or something that's not pure, , something that doesn't have purpose, right? So that's what so holy is separated. So it's important to understand that.
Justin: 'cause a lot of the times we think about, oh [00:04:00] the, you know, just reading the Bible, what, what does this stuff mean? What is it to be holy? So the reason our. Savior was to be without sin is because he was to show us the way to be holy to separate us. Mm-hmm. To be set apart, right? Yeah. Yeah. So, or to be consecrated.
Justin: So when we are. Somebody who is impure. Mm-hmm. Or when we are somebody who is living in darkness, it's hard for us to even know we're in darkness. Right? So it takes a savior, it takes somebody who came in the image just like us as man to , live a similar life and have to face the same kind of battles and temptations.
Justin: Mm-hmm. To be the light of the world. Right. It says, the Bible says Jesus is the light of the world. It takes somebody to be the light to pull us out of darkness. Yes. And by being saved, like you were saying, [00:05:00] I love that being saved from ourselves. We can now walk. In the light mm-hmm. As he was in the light.
Justin: That's true. To bring others out of darkness.
Don: That is true. Yeah. And it's interesting, Justin, if we go back a little further, uh, we get back in the Old Testament, uh mm-hmm. When they, you know, the Israelites and stuff, they always had to consecrate themselves. They had to clean themselves up before they could come to God.
Don: Yep. And , so it was almost like an example of what. We need to do. And back in the Old Testament, Jesus, I mean, they used a lamb that was free of any type of blemishes or whatever. It was a perfect lamb. They offered up as a sacrifice and this redeemed the people from the unrighteousness and things that they had done.
Don: Mm-hmm. So that they could be clean before God.
both: Yeah.
Don: And it was an example of a redeemer that was to come a perfect lamb. Mm-hmm. Jesus was, he was the Lamb of God perfect in all his ways. And he redeemed us so that we can become perfect. [00:06:00] And I know Peter talks a little bit about that. 'cause he talked about Jesus, you know, after the day of Pentecost, they received the baptism and the Holy Spirit.
Don: They started speaking things. People became pricked in their hearts and they realized who they crucified. They, they actually sacrificed the lamb. They, they crucified that lamb. Yeah. And he said, ? He says, what hope does any of us have? And and Peter said, you know, you repent, you get baptized and your sins are gonna be remiss, so you're gonna be made clean, which is a process of becoming holy, becoming perfected, so that you can enter into the presence of God because he deals with whole people and holiness.
Justin: Yeah. So he wants us to be pure, he wants us to be righteous. Yeah. And that's why, you know, you read the common. Theme in the Bible is this great faith that everybody had. Abraham is the father of, , many nations. Of all nations in some case. Yeah. But he is his faith. What he did re correcting [00:07:00] his ways and trusting God, his faith was imputed to him as righteousness.
Justin: Yeah. Right. It's imputed to him as righteousness because we are called to live righteous lives. We are. That's right. Now when it comes to. When it comes to being holy again, there is a scripture in Isaiah, it's chapter six, verse three, and it says that God is holy, you know, meaning he is perfectly pure, righteous, and separated from sin.
Justin: Mm-hmm. Right? So the fall is what pulled us into sin. Yeah. And Jesus is coming to show us the way back. Right. He says, I'm the truth. The way and the life. So he's the way, right? He's showing you the way to get back. Yeah. To be set apart, to separate yourself. Like you were saying,
Justin: he, he wants you to become the light because when we. because we need to be just like he was the light of the world. We need to be the light for the world. Right. The church body, his body of believers needs to be the light for the world. Yeah. The light is [00:08:00] shining from the fruits of the spear. We've talked about the fruits of the spear.
Justin: Right, right. People will know you by your fruits. Yeah. And this is why it's important to understand what it means to be born again. Yeah. It's,, it's important to understand what it means. To be dead to sin. Yeah. . It's important to understand what it means to walk in the spirit, right?
Justin: Yeah. Yeah. Because this new life, this eternal life that we are to have mm-hmm. Does not start. When we pass away from this world, no, it starts here right now. It's, it's an everlasting life. It's not a buy and buy thing. No, it means it's here. And the reason I'm saying this is because after Jesus died once, he came back on the third day.
Don: Yeah.
Justin: And he was resurrected. He was witnessed by many. And he preached only about the Kingdom [00:09:00] of God for 40 days. Mm-hmm. He was telling them the kingdom of God is here and this was 2000 years ago. Yeah. So he's telling them about eternal life. That is now I. Right. This eternal life starts now and it is everlasting.
both: It is.
Justin: And I think once we can get that, once we can understand that, we can truly know what it means to break free. To be saved. Yeah. To be fully saved. Yeah. To stop walking as we once walked, to get out of darkness and to walk in the light. As he is in the light. Yeah.
Don: Yep. That is so true. And that's where Jesus was tremendous example.
Don: And it's almost like, you know, this, , I think it's a TV program called Let's Make a Deal.
both: Yeah.
Don: You know, it's almost like Jesus came with a message. You know, they call it the gospel. They call it the good news. Have, I got a deal for you. Mm-hmm. You know, I'm gonna take care of everything in your life.
Don: I'm gonna make all things new. I'm gonna. Create something that is, um, as far as sin. 'cause sin has all kinds of ugliness all [00:10:00] around it. Mm-hmm. And imperfections and stuff like that. That's why sacrifice in the Old Testament had to be perfect. Jesus became a perfect sacrifice, became a perfect example, but he came with a message and, , that message is, we need to trust and, and have faith in him, but I got a deal for you.
Don: Mm-hmm. If you push your trust. In me is what Jesus would say. I am gonna take care of everything. I'm even gonna prepare a place for you. You know? Yeah. You know, you look at people and , I've talked about this before, 'cause I talked to my grandchildren. I mean, who do you want living with You? A slob. No.
Don: You want something that's gonna be clean and respectable. All this sort and the hard thing, I mean the easy thing, but it is a hard thing, is the fact that God has to do it all. I mean, we can't do it. You know, the Bible says our righteousness in ways are as filthy rags. No matter how good we think we can, we become a goody tissue.
Don: Mm-hmm. We are never good enough for that kingdom you're talking about. Mm-hmm. So when we come and develop a faith in us that says right [00:11:00] now, mm-hmm. I believe. That he has a place, eternal life is at hand. It is here right now. I just need to trust in God and he puts me into a salvation mode. Mm-hmm. Where he starts to clean me, he starts to make all things new inside me.
Don: Mm-hmm. All of a sudden I'm joyful. You talk about the fruits of the spirit, Justin. Yeah. These things start to pop out on my le uh, my branches. Yep. You know, everybody wants to be a part of me 'cause I'm very likable. Mm-hmm. Because I can love. I can love people. Mm-hmm. I can cherish people. All things start to , look differently because you talk about a darkness, you can't see it.
Don: Mm-hmm. And that's where, and it isn't sometimes. We've talked about this earlier . It's your example. It's how you live your life. It's the joy, the peace they see in you. They are open, they are ripe for this type of message of being saved. Yeah. And that's what Jesus came to do for us.
Justin: Yeah. And I want to talk about something here, just something that you said kind of sparked something in my mind, and it is, [00:12:00] you know, I often think that there's usually two, two ways.
Justin: There's probably many more, but there's, from my experience and the way I've. Witness things and have heard people's testimonies and talked to people. It seems like there's two ways that people generally come to God. Okay. So there's number one, and that's typically when somebody just comes to the end of themselves.
Justin: Yeah.
Don: Yeah.
Justin: The way that they're working, the way that they're. Moving their life, the way that they're operating their life is no longer working to them. And it might get them to a really dark place. Right? It might get them to a place where they wanna take their own life or whatever the case is, but they get to a point where they end up reaching out to a higher power.
Justin: 'cause they just say, I, I don't want to do this on my own. I can't do it on my own anymore. Mm-hmm. And that's one way. I think the second way is, I think when somebody witnesses somebody else and they see. The power of God in them. And they see the fruits of the spirit [00:13:00] and they see, they might see Jesus in that person and they say, you know what?
Justin: What does this person have? What is this? ? How do I get this? How do, how do I walk like this? How do I obtain this? How do I, that peace that they have? Yeah. What, where does that come from? Like are they faking this? You know what I'm saying? And I think that's the two main ways that somebody comes to God.
Justin: Yeah. And I think when it. Comes to Jesus. I think he would rather prefer number two, because . He wants you To see the light in him. Yeah. So that you can become the light for others. Right. And that's really what it means to walk in this really, that's really what it means to be walking as children of light.
Justin: Mm-hmm. We're not supposed to go tell people that they're gonna go to hell for all eternity. That's right. You know, Paul says it's the goodness. Of God that leads people to repentance. That's right's. Great. I It is. When you show people the goodness or when they see it from the fruits in your life, right.
Justin: It is that goodness that they see from a new way, a separated way. [00:14:00] Yeah. A set apart way. Right. Holy way. It is when they see that, that it leads them to repentance. Now they want to be set apart. Yeah. Now they want to change things in their life. Right now they wanna start. Dissecting the way they have been doing things and they, they wanna start just living a different life.
Justin: Yeah. And that's what Jesus has called us to do. So when it comes to works and stuff, you were saying, you know, Hebrews, it's chapter 10, uh, verse 14. It says, four by one offering he has perfected forever.
Justin: Those that are sanctified. Mm-hmm. Okay. And that's a really powerful scripture. That's right. So what that is saying is that sanctified means you are progressively made holy. Or set apart right through the work of the Holy Spirit. Okay, so the Holy Spirit is named,. So because he is God, he's embodying divine purity and [00:15:00] power.
Justin: Mm-hmm. Holy Spirit, right? Yep. He's a mighty comforter, mighty counselor. He's power, right? Who lives in us. Jesus said, it's better that I go, I will not leave you powerless. Right. Amen. Amen. So he is power. So, but his spirit is a witness to your spirit when you are saved. The two spirits, Paul says, become one.
Justin: So now my spirit is now set apart. Right. , there's a Holy Spirit is moving in my life. He's operating so he is going to lead me into all truth. That's right. He's a person. He is going to show me the way, just as Jesus showed the way. Right. He is going to lead me out of darkness just as Jesus called people out of darkness.
Justin: Right. Right. . He is going to. Help me to lead others to their salvation. Yeah. From themselves out of darkness. Right, right. So it is not by our own works. It is not by our our own works that we do these things. It is by the power of the Holy Spirit, right? Yeah. The power of God. So, Ephesians, where this comes from, Ephesians chapter two verse eight talks about that we are [00:16:00] saved.
Justin: By grace through faith.
Don: Mm-hmm.
Justin: And that this was a gift from God.
Don: Right.
Justin: And not by works, so we can't boast. Right. I know a lot of people say that and, and they, they almost say that sometimes to be like, well, we shouldn't do any works. Yeah. Well, that's not true because. While salvation is by faith, a genuine faith Yeah.
Justin: Produces good deeds. Right. And a genuine faith produces perseverance. Paul says that those who endure to the end shall be saved. Yeah. Right. So he says that he fought the good fight, he finished his faith. Yeah. He finished his course and fought the good fight of faith. Faith, yeah. That's good. . So faith is a fight itself and but a genuine faith produces the endurance needed to finish the race. Yeah. Right. So sometimes we need to see these things and see that what comes from the faith, what comes from these things are good deeds, are good works, right? Yes. We're not boasting about [00:17:00] them because.
Justin: This was a gift from God through Faith. Yeah. We wouldn't have faith at all if we didn't have this free gift from God. Right. Right. But it is by producing this and working this and growing in this. Yeah. That we see the good works produced in our lives and in others. Mm-hmm. Which will then help. Bring people out of darkness and into light.
Justin: Yeah, that's true.
Don: And the whole ordeal is a process in life. And I know, , people get turned on by the process and excited about it. I know for myself, the first time I really heard. The gospel and had faith like you had mentioned there. Mm-hmm. Things changed. I mean, all of a sudden I started seeing things differently, you know, and then I started to realize the wrongs in my life and I could come to God and say, you know, take this from me.
Don: I. You know, I am. , I'm sorry. And I realized too, in the process of all this, that I can't do it by myself. I can't make up a list of everything is wrong and say, [00:18:00] well, I'll take care of her this next week. You know, God has to really do the work. Mm-hmm. And that's the process that God does, because I know the Bible talks about.
Don: You know, Jesus coming someday, uh, for a bride, , free of spot and wrinkle, he talks about a lot of cleaning, a lot of stuff that needs to be done. Yeah. He talks about us going on a potter's wheel. Yeah. Where he has to reform us and remold us. You know, God is wanting to do all this. Mm-hmm. But it's, it's the understanding of the fact that we are in his hands.
Don: You know, to be able to have, be peaceful in life and realize whatever the circumstance might be, nobody makes it out of this world alive naturally. Mm-hmm. You know, there's a whole new life, an everlasting life that can start right now. Mm-hmm. But we can be a part of that hand, and when we pass away, it is just a passing.
Don: We just pass from a beautiful life that God has created for us here into something that's gonna be there for eternity. Yeah. And to be sanctified, like you said, Justin, you know, one sacrifice for all, all mankind. For all times, Jesus was a sacrifice. We don't have to [00:19:00] have a whole, , flock of sheep out back for every time we do something wrong.
Don: You know, he's gonna sanctify us and he's gonna give us the ability to overcome it, you know, overcome the wrongs in our life. Mm-hmm. So many times people deal with addictions. Different things of that nature. Jesus is wanting to be the answer. We can go through, uh,, so many steps and doing different things or whatever, but the true answer, 'cause there is a freedom when you talk about he came, , uh, Jesus came to set the captives free.
Don: That is a process of salvation and it is. Sometimes, you know, people say that, , salvation is real cheap. That's all you gotta do is say, it really isn't, because it really requires you of giving your life and being crucified with him, a dying to an old way of life and allowing a new life to be formed inside you.
Don: And that's where, again, as you were mentioning Justin, that Jesus was a perfect example of just doing that. You know, he died and he rose again. We do that. We die to our [00:20:00] old ways. Give him up to Jesus and say, Hey, you know, make me clean. Make me a part of you. And that's where he's faithful. The Bible says he's closer than any brother could ever be to us.
Don: He wants to be our friend. He wants to be connected with us. He wants to love us, and he wants this more than we wanted. That's the thing that I always try to play with my mind. Yeah. You know.
Justin: , he definitely wants it more than we want and I think that's a hard thing even to get our, our minds around.
Justin: Yeah. Because God loved the world so much that he sent this savior for us so that he could come in the image of us. Yes. To show us the way as the son of man. And to show us this separated set apart way that we weren't seeing. Yeah. So that we could find our way back to God. Right back to the Father. So it, it is by seeing the example that was laid out for us, that our savior came in the image of us.
Justin: Right. You know, he came as man, like I was saying, he [00:21:00] came as the son of man to show us the way to be set apart.
both: Yes.
Justin: And . I find it interesting because he was tempted in the wilderness, , by Satan to prove that he was the son of God many times. Mm-hmm. Which we know he is the son of God.
Justin: Right. And he's the son of man. But , Satan is specifically trying to, , he's tempting him to try to get Jesus to obey his commands, his requests to prove he's the son of God. Yeah. So if he would've given into the temptations and fulfilled those requests of Satan right then, he would not have been a true example.
Justin: As man to follow. Mm-hmm. If he's the son of God. Right. 'cause then he's, he's apart from us. Yeah. We can't be like the son of God. Right. But however, if he fights those temptations Yeah. Just as we fight temptations. Right? Yes. Yes. And he is one like us. Mm-hmm. He is the son of man. He had to come in our image.
Justin: Yeah. Therefore [00:22:00] he is in our image. He faced the same kind of temptations. Yeah. That we face the same pains that we face. He did to save us. Yes. And he had to do that to save us. No, he had to fight the temptations. Right. To not turn the stones to bread because we know he can obviously do these things.
Justin: Right. He performed miracles. Five loaves, two fish. Yeah. Water to wine, all this stuff. So he was able to do it, but he had to fight these temptations so that he would be an example for us to follow. Yeah. So it is not to just receive our savior and to say the work is done because it, it is done for us to be saved.
Justin: However we are to be sanctified, we are to walk in this way that is right to be set apart so that we can walk in this eternal life. Yep. This is to. Save others. You know, how are we going to make disciples if we do not disciple ourselves first? Mm-hmm. If we do not become disciples first.
Justin: Right. Jesus was wanting to create disciples so they can go out into the [00:23:00] world. Hence , before he leaves,, he gives the great commission, which is to go, therefore go and make disciples of all nations of the. Right. So , it's just important to understand this stuff because this is what it means to be saved.
Justin: Mm-hmm. So my question to people who are listening to this is, are you saved? Are you acting like you're saved? Are you becoming set apart? Yeah. You know, because the Bible talks about repentance and transformation. Mm-hmm. Right. In second Corinthians, Paul says that if anyone is in Christ.
Justin: The new creation , has come, the new creation has come. The old has passed, right?
Don: Yeah. The
Justin: new has come.
Don: Yeah.
Justin: What does that mean? That means you're a new creation.
Don: Yeah.
Justin: So this includes turning away from sin. Mm-hmm. And we've talked about repentance is, is just knowing the right way from the wrong, realizing you're doing things the wrong way and I want [00:24:00] to do things the right way.
Don: Yeah.
Justin: Well, right comes from the word righteous. You know, I wanna live the right way. Amen. I no longer wanna do things. The way that I have been. I wanna recognize and I wanna follow this new way. Amen. And I wanna produce this fruit in my life, this new fruit. 'cause I'm a new creation. Yes. I want to have joy.
Justin: I want to have love. I want to have obedience to God's commands. 'cause I don't want to do things the way that I have been. It has hasn't been producing fruit in my life. And I see that I'm living in darkness now. Yep. And. That doesn't mean that we are to just say that. I'm perfect and I can't sin. He's the perfect one.
Justin: Hebrews, like I was saying, tells you that we are being perfected. Amen. From now on, those that are sanctified forever. That's right. We're being perfected for by one offering. It only took one offering once and for all. So what that means. Is that we no longer should [00:25:00] identify as sinners. Yeah. We should identify as being saved.
Justin: Right.
Don: And that's the beauty of what God is wanting to do for us because we don't have a day to wait. Mm-hmm. You know, this is the answer for all mankind for life itself, because I know I've read. A genius and person that uses all their abilities possible only uses about 75% of what they could possibly do.
Don: And what holds people back is a sin and a wrongdoing in a person's life. And the only way we glorify God is by allowing him to work inside of us. And he saves us from ourselves. Yeah, he saves us from ourselves so that we can be the best. People that we possibly can. Mm-hmm. And this is a salvation that he's made for all of us and it's, it's open to us.
Don: We just have to believe and seek after him.
Justin: Yeah. In our home, we come from the heavenly, you know, Peter says in First Peter, we are partakers of the divine in nature. Amen. So we actually [00:26:00] have a divine nature. Yeah. So , I want to close out with this, and that's by. Just highlighting a parable that Jesus talks about in the Bible.
Justin: It's the prodigal son. Right. And a lot of people I've heard referenced. Um, actually I think the only way that I've heard, this reference is for believers, you know, people who have so to say, become saved and then have fallen from the faith and have come back.
Justin: Mm. Come back to their home. Right. The prodigal is coming home. Yeah. And if you look in the Bible, Jesus talks about this parable in the same context that he talks about the parable of the a hundred sheep, , the one going astray from the 99 and the shepherd going.
Justin: Leaving the 99 behind just to save the one and bring him back. Yeah. Right. And. I do believe that the prodigal son parable is referring also in that same [00:27:00] context to non-believers. Because in Paul's writings, he talks about that he believes this is Paul who was murdering Christians at some point.
Justin: Yeah. He was persecuting Christians, murdering them because he thought he was doing the will of God. Yeah. And then he ends up saying in his writings that he was appointed as an apostle since birth.
both: Mm-hmm.
Justin: And that's important to understand because. I do believe that we have a divine nature and that we,
Justin: we're appointed since birth This life. Paul says this life, you must not love your own life unto death because it was never your life to begin with, and I don't think he realizes this after becoming saved. I think he realizes that this life was never his to begin with. Yeah. This life was always given to you to glorify God.
Justin: That's right. This life was given to you so that you would fulfill his will in your life. And you know what, I really believe this is because [00:28:00] your life was never your own since birth. It was made to glorify him. That's right. Your purpose was corrupted. Because the enemy saw how valuable you were for the kingdom.
Justin: Mm-hmm. And I think this is why Jesus speaks so highly of children and not to block them or delay them from coming to him. Right. Because he sees that childlike faith is what we need. Right. We need to go back to that because that is where our purpose was created. That's what, where our purpose was molded.
Justin: Like you were saying, the potter in the wheel. Right. Our life was given to us. To glorify him again. Mm-hmm. So it is when we finally come home as the prodigal son or daughter, it is when we finally come home that we are saved. Yeah. Yeah. It is. When realizing that , it says in that parable that the father gave.
Justin: The child, his inheritance and sent him off and he squandered it. All right. It is when we[00:29:00] finally realize, when we squander it all sometimes, that we wasted it all. We no longer wanna live in this darkness. We no longer wanna live the way we have been, and we want to come home. Yeah. As a servant, you know, the prodigal son says that I'm not even worthy to be a son of yours.
Justin: Yeah. And that's the way we feel when we finally are saved. Mm-hmm. And I think that's what it looks like when you finally are saved. You're ready to walk a new way. Mm.
